A Spot With a Growing Red Ring on a Senior Basset Hound
by A reader
A spot with a spreading red ring can be a skin infection that's moving outward, ringworm, a reaction at a surgery or injection site, an insect bite, or a hot spot. Basset Hounds are prone to skin infections because of their skin folds.
Because it's growing while she is already on an antibiotic, please have your vet see it rather than treating it at home. It may need a different antibiotic, chosen with a skin culture, or it may not be an infection at all.
In the meantime, keep it clean and dry, stop her licking it, and don't put creams on it unless your vet says they're safe. Go sooner if it becomes hot, swollen, painful or starts to ooze, or she gets a fever or seems unwell.
