A Soft Lump Under a Shar Pei's Eye
by A reader
Soft, squishy, painless lumps under the eye in a young dog are often a fluid-filled swelling, such as a salivary gland cyst or a pocket of fluid from a tooth root problem, or a soft fatty lump. Shar Peis also have thick skin folds, and allergies can cause puffy swelling around the eyes.
A tooth root abscess is worth ruling out. The roots of the upper back teeth sit just below the eye, and an infection there causes swelling under the eye that can come and go. Your vet can check her mouth and may suggest dental X-rays.
Please have it checked, even though it doesn't bother her. A quick needle sample usually shows what it is. Go sooner if it gets hard, painful or warm, the eye starts to bulge, or she has trouble eating.
