A Skin Tag on a Dog's Chest That Looks Like a Nipple

by A reader

Reader Question
White skin tag that looks like a nipple, but higher than one should be. She is 7 years old.

Answer from Our Team

Small soft growths that hang from the skin are very common in middle-aged and older dogs. A white or pale skin-colored skin tag (a benign growth called a fibropapilloma) or a small wart is the most likely cause. Dogs also sometimes have an extra nipple in an unusual spot, but extra nipples line up along the two rows on the belly and chest, so one that is much higher is more likely a skin tag.

Most skin tags are harmless and can be left alone. Ask your vet to look at it at her next checkup, and sooner if it grows quickly, changes color, bleeds, or she licks or scratches at it. A vet can tell most of these apart by looking, and can remove it easily if it bothers her.
