A Senior Beagle With Heart Disease Who Can No Longer Walk

by A reader

Reader Question
Our 12-year-old rescue Beagle was diagnosed with heart disease through x-rays last week. The vet prescribed a diuretic and a heart medicine. I have also been giving her CBD treats for dogs and dandelion tea, powder and tap root. In the last two days she can no longer walk without help. Is this a CBD side effect, or are we getting close to our girl's departure?

Answer from Our Team

Please call your vet today. Sudden weakness so she can't walk without help can come from worsening heart failure, a drop in blood pressure, dehydration or low potassium from the diuretic, or the combination of products she is now taking. It needs to be checked rather than assumed to be the end.

Dandelion acts as a natural diuretic, so with the prescribed diuretic, it can cause too much fluid loss and electrolyte problems, which leads to weakness. CBD can cause sedation and wobbliness, and can affect how some medicines are processed. Stop the dandelion and CBD until you've talked with your vet, and bring a list of everything you've given her.

Count her breathing while she sleeps. A resting rate consistently above about 30 breaths per minute, breathing with effort, fainting, gums that look pale or blue, or collapse need emergency care. If your vet finds her heart disease is advancing, they can also help you judge her quality of life and keep her comfortable.
