A Pus-Filled Blister With a Red Ring on a Chihuahua
by A reader
A single pus-filled bump with a red rim is often an infected hair follicle, a small abscess or a ruptured cyst. A spot that hasn't healed in 3 to 4 weeks, though, should be checked, because some skin tumors, including histiocytomas and mast cell tumors, can look like a pimple or blister.
Your vet can take a quick needle sample in the exam room to see whether it's an infection or a growth. That tells you whether it needs antibiotics, can be watched, or should be removed.
In the meantime, stop the ointment, since she may lick it off, and don't squeeze it. Keep it clean and dry and stop her scratching it.
