A Pouch of Tissue Sticking Out Near a Puppy's Eye
by A reader
A small pink pouch of tissue that pops out at the corner of the eye in a puppy is most often cherry eye, where the tear gland of the third eyelid slips out of place. It usually shows at the inner, lower corner of the eye. It isn't usually painful, but it should be seen by a vet, because the gland makes much of the eye's tears.
Treatment is usually a small surgery to tuck the gland back into place, which keeps it working and protects against dry eye later. Removing the gland is no longer recommended. Sometimes it pops back by itself, but it usually comes out again.
Other things that can look similar include swelling of the eyelid lining (conjunctivitis) and, less often, a cyst. See your vet soon, and sooner if the eye is red, squinty or has discharge.
