A New Bald Patch on an Older Terrier Mix's Side
by A reader
A single small bald patch that appears in about a week in an older dog, and only itches a little, can come from a skin infection, a small area of ringworm, a flea or insect bite reaction, a pressure spot from lying on a hard surface, or occasionally a skin growth starting under the skin.
Have your vet take a look if it doesn't start to regrow within 2 to 3 weeks, or sooner if it grows, gets red or crusty, or more patches appear. A skin scraping and fungal test are quick and inexpensive, and can rule out mites and ringworm.
Meanwhile, check him for fleas, keep the spot clean and dry, and don't use human creams.
