A Marble-Sized Sore on a Coonhound's Upper Eyelid

by A reader

Reader Question
my bluetick has a eye sore about the size of marble on his upper eye lid for about a month .I've started using a salt water wash on the upper lid about 2 weeks ago and using an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment, but don't like using it due to blindness

Answer from Our Team

A marble-sized lump or sore on the eyelid that has been there a month should be seen by your vet. Common causes include an eyelid gland that is blocked and infected, a benign eyelid growth that has become irritated, an abscess, or a growth that needs to be removed.

You're right to be careful with ointments. Over-the-counter antibiotic ointments made for people aren't meant for use in the eye, and some can irritate the eye. Plain saline washes are fine to continue.

Most eyelid lumps this size are easy to treat or remove, and acting now prevents it from rubbing on the eye. See your vet sooner if the eye becomes red, squinty or cloudy.

See eyelid growths in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
