A Maltipoo's Eye Swelling Badly After Two Puncture Wounds

by A reader

Reader Question
I had to put down my Maltipoo - its was the worse experience I ever had in my life.

I left her playing with a small ball- and came back to find her with two small puncture marks on her face almost level with the right eye but located in the area between the eyes.

Her right eye was grossly inflamed like a something in a horror movie- at least 5 times the size of her normal eye- bugged out of the socket (but undamaged- as in no tears or rips- and secured in the socket even that it was grossly larger with the a film over the iris- The muscles moved and followed movement

The (puncture) marks were too small to be of a large dog attack (the big dog isn't agressive and never attacked the small dogs)

There was no other injuries to the body (as in a fight of the small or the large dog) - and no sign of struggle on the other dogs (big or small) either.

The size was of marks in the middle at lower than eye level - appeared more the size of the small dog- the wounds kept bleeding and was hard to stop the blood flow.

The ball the Maltipoo was playing with was found under furniture- near the wall.(I thought maybe the marks were from a foreign nail under the furniture - or maybe marks from the wood supports.

Being uneducated with the functions of a dogs eye. I was wondering if there was maybe an main vein that supplied the eye around that area - and if it possibly got severed from the deep puncture(s)

Answer from Our Team

I'm so sorry for your loss. That sounds like a terrible experience. Small paired puncture marks near the eye are typical of a bite, often from another animal, even a dog who isn't normally aggressive, or occasionally a snake or insect bite, depending on where you live. In small dogs, a bite or hard blow near the eye can cause severe swelling behind the eye and bleeding.

There are large blood vessels in the face near the eye, and in small dogs the eye sits in a shallow socket. Bleeding or swelling behind the eye can push it forward very quickly, which is called proptosis. Puncture wounds also tend to bleed more than you'd expect from their size.

Nothing you did caused this, and it would have been hard to prevent. If you have other small dogs, it might help to watch play between dogs of very different sizes, since accidental injuries can happen quickly.
