A Dog Keeping Her Eyes Closed a Few Days After a Playdate
by A reader
A dog can't be allergic to another breed as such, but after close play she could have picked up an eye infection (such as viral or bacterial conjunctivitis or kennel cough, which can affect the eyes), or gotten a scratch on the eye from a paw, tooth or toy. A reaction to the other dog's dander is possible but less likely to cause this.
Keeping the eyes closed and not wanting to open them usually means the eyes are painful. A scratched cornea is common after rough play and can get worse quickly if not treated.
Please have her seen by your vet today if you can. A simple stain test shows a scratch, and the right drops usually fix it fast. Don't use leftover drops, especially any containing a steroid, until the vet has checked.
