A Dark, Rough Spot on a Young Shih Tzu's Belly

by A reader

Reader Question
I recently found a dark rough spot on my dog's belly i don't have the money to take him to the vet. He is 1yr and a half old Shih Tzu. Is there anything i can get over the counter?

Answer from Our Team

A small dark, rough spot on the belly is often old pigment after a bite or small infection, a dried scab, or a harmless pigmented spot. Many dogs normally have dark freckles on the belly. It's also worth checking for a tick, which can look like a dark bump.

Look at it closely with a magnifying glass. If it's flat and isn't changing, keeping it clean and watching it is reasonable. There isn't an over-the-counter product that is needed for a harmless spot, and human creams aren't recommended.

See a vet if it grows, becomes raised, bleeds, itches, or more appear, or if you find a tick you can't remove fully. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
