A Couple of Pimples Near a Young Vizsla's Penis

by A reader

Reader Question
Just noticed a couple of pimples near my dog's penis. Not on it but near it. My dog is a rescue Vizsla, male and 21 months old. I've had him 5 1/2 months. He currently eats an all-natural dog food but does have various kinds of treats. He is not much of an outside dog. He goes and does his business and comes right back inside. I have another Vizsla, female, 2 1/2 years old without any skin issues, and she loves to be outdoors chasing squirrels and birds. Thanks.

Answer from Our Team

Small pimples on the hairless skin of the belly and groin are common in young dogs. They are often a mild bacterial infection called puppy pyoderma or a form of folliculitis, and sometimes a reaction to something he lies on or a sign of a mild allergy. A couple of spots that don't bother him are usually not urgent.

Keep the area clean and dry, and try not to squeeze the pimples. Check his bedding and anything new he lies on, and watch whether more appear.

See your vet if they spread, become crusty or itchy, last more than a week or two, or if you see any discharge from the penis or sheath, swelling, or changes in how he pees. A quick skin test can show whether he needs a medicated wash or other treatment.
