A Cauliflower-Like Growth on an Older Dog's Head

by A reader

Reader Question
My 12-year-old Pit Bull and Lab mix has a cauliflower-type growth on the side of his head and face, below his ear. What is this?

Answer from Our Team

In older dogs, a bumpy, cauliflower-shaped growth is most often a benign growth of the oil glands (a sebaceous adenoma or hyperplasia) or an old-dog wart. These are very common and usually harmless.

Because a few skin cancers can look similar, it's wise to have your vet look at it, especially if it grows quickly, bleeds, ulcerates, or feels firm and attached underneath. A needle sample or a small biopsy can confirm what it is.

If it's benign and not bothering him, it can simply be watched. Growths that get scratched or bleed can be removed, sometimes with a quick procedure.

See dog warts and skin tags.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
