A Bump in the Inner Corner of a Puppy's Eye
by A reader
A red or pink bump in the inner corner of the eye of a young dog is often a cherry eye. This happens when the tear gland of the third eyelid slips out of place and swells. It's most common in dogs under 2 years old and isn't usually painful at first, but it can get irritated and bleed when a dog rubs or scratches it.
Because he's scratching it and it's bleeding, please have him seen in the next day or two. Scratching can injure the surface of the eye, and an eye problem can get worse quickly. Until then, try to stop him rubbing it with a cone if you have one, and don't put any human eye drops or creams on it.
If it is a cherry eye, vets aim to put the gland back in place rather than remove it, because the gland makes a large share of the eye's tears and removing it raises the risk of dry eye later. See cherry eye in dogs and dog eye anatomy.
