A Brown Spot That Moves Around in a Staffy's Eye

by A reader

Reader Question
My Staffy has a brown spot on the cornea of her eye & it seems to move around. It has been apparent for a few years & hasn't caused any inflammation, watering, redness or any visual problems to her eye. It doesn't seem to bother her at all which is why I haven't been too worried about it. Any idea of what it is & if she needs medical attention for it? I have included pics that were taken only minutes from each other to show the movement of the spot. Also She has lived with another dog her whole life & the other dog has no eye problems at all. She is 7 years old & has had no health problems at all.

Answer from Our Team

A brown spot that floats and moves around inside the eye is most often an iris cyst (uveal cyst). These are small, hollow, fluid-filled bubbles that break loose from the back of the iris and drift in the fluid at the front of the eye. They are usually harmless, especially when they don't cause redness, squinting or vision problems, as in your dog.

It's still worth having your vet look, because a vet needs to tell a cyst apart from a solid pigmented growth (melanoma), which looks similar but doesn't float. A bright light shone through the spot usually shows whether it is hollow.

Most cysts are just watched. Have her seen again if the spot gets bigger, multiplies, sticks to the cornea, or if you notice cloudiness, redness, squinting or a change in her pupil.
