A Bone in a Dog's Penis: Is That Normal?

by A reader

Reader Question
My daughter has a 7-month-old Golden Retriever being treated for a UTI for the 4th time. When I looked at his penis, I noticed there always seems to be a bone in it. Is that normal?

Answer from Our Team

Yes. Dogs have a bone inside the penis called the os penis, so feeling a firm bony part is normal.

Repeated urinary infections in a young male are not normal, though. Ask your vet about a urine culture, which picks the right antibiotic, and an X-ray or ultrasound to look for bladder stones or a problem with the urinary tract. Problems with the prostate or sheath can also cause repeated infections.
