Dog Hypothyroidism Weight Loss
by Michelle Scott

Before she was diagnosed she was overweight and loved to eat. I was concerned with her weight and she was drinking a lot of water and that's when she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I've had her on medicine to treat her thyroid for 6-8 months now.
She is very thin, alomost too thin, her spine and ribs show. Her skin is very dry and flaky, she is very lethargic and i'm having a very hard time getting her to eat. I've had her tested for cushings, and diabetes results were fine.
Any suggestions????

Hi Michelle,
Something is definitely not right with your Boston. Has her thyroid level been retested since you started her on the thyroid supplement?
Some of her current symptoms, like the weight loss, make me think that she may be getting too much thyroid hormone. Another possibility is that something brand new has developed since her initial diagnosis, so I think another complete work-up is called for (despite the expense). This would probably include a physical exam, blood work (including thyroid recheck), a urinalysis, heartworm testing if she’s not current on preventative and testing, and possibly some diagnostic imaging like x-rays or ultrasound based on the results of the her physical exam and lab work.
Less likely I think is that her initial diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism was incorrect. She sounds like a pretty classic case, but sometimes dogs will have a low thyroid level because they are sick for another reason. The condition is called sick euthyroid syndrome.
Good luck!
