Can Store-Bought Food Prevent Struvite Stones in Dogs?

by A reader

Reader Question
Are there any over-the-counter dog foods that can help prevent struvite stones?

Answer from Our Team

We couldn't find any store-bought food that has been shown to prevent struvite stones in dogs. The reason is that in dogs, almost all struvite stones form because of a bladder infection. Bacteria that break down urea make the urine more alkaline, and struvite crystals and stones form in that urine.

So the most useful prevention steps are:

  • Catch and treat urinary infections early. Ask your vet for a urine culture, not just a dipstick test, if your dog has had struvite stones before or shows signs such as peeing often, straining or blood in the urine.
  • Keep the urine dilute. Feeding wet food, adding water to meals and making sure fresh water is always available all help.
  • Recheck regularly. A urine test every few months lets your vet spot a new infection before stones form again.
  • Make sure the stone type was confirmed. Struvite and calcium oxalate stones need opposite approaches, so a stone analysis matters.

Diets made to dissolve or prevent struvite are tested and sold through vets. Foods labeled "urinary" in pet stores aren't held to the same testing, and they can't prevent infection-related stones on their own. Ask your vet whether a prevention diet makes sense for your dog.
