German Shepard Does Not Open Eyes Requires a trip to the Veterinary Emergency Roorm for a dog eye exam

Our German Shepard doesn't want to open her eyes. When she does they are only slits. She acts like it hurts to open them. Everything is black, iris, ocular cavity , sclera.

Her normal color is a beautiful red brown, there is also a small white discharge. Since it is Sunday our vet isn't open. Should we bring her to the emergency vet or do you think we can wait until tomorrow?

Do you have any ideas of what it could be that is keeping her dog eyes from opening?

Vet Suggestion dog eyes do not open

Hello,

Whenever you are faced with a significant abnormality affecting the eyes (and what you describe is definitely significant!), it is always best to take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.

I cannot say what your dog’s particular condition might be without examining her, but many eye problems can get very bad very quickly. You don’t want to risk your dog’s eyesight by waiting until your regular veterinarian is open.

While it is true that seeing an emergency vet is a little more expensive than waiting for an appointment during normal business hours, you may very well end up saving money in the long run by getting on top of the situation as quickly as possible.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
